Trans Harness Info..

As some of us know the connector pin-out is a little 'off' (The newer one has a reverse view) on the Article so I figured I'd make one up for those of us that are swapping in a newer 4R. I added the MLPS stuff just as an FYI.

Update:

On the MN12 connector pin #7 does not exist (ie: not there, at least on my '94) so one would either have to have the special pull-a-pin tool and swap the pins around or make sure you get the harness with the newer trans.

If you use the older connector, you also have to bore the holes out for the wires to go through the wire holders.

Remove the black plastic cover and carefully dig out the blue rubber thingy.

Remove the black plastic pin thing-a-mah-bob.

You can see the tab that holds the pin in the #2 hole. The top two holes have the tabs on the sides.

Gently push the wire into the connector from the back and release the pin by carefully wedging a pick or jewelers screwdriver on the tab from the front part of the hole while gingerly pulling on the wire at the same time.

The pins are 50 cent each.

That is how it should look when done. Be sure to install the wires through their respective hole on both the Blue thing and plastic cap thing.
Two extra RED power wires/pins will be left over. Be sure to keep them out of harms way or cut them out of the picture competely.

The reason there are two power wires left over is because the newer style takes care of the routing internally. I cleaned all the connectors with contact cleaner, used fresh Die-electric grease and re-taped the trans harness since it gets so hot in there.

Good stuff. As to keeping the extra red wires out of the way I stuck mine in the two unused top slots. Looks factory and you don't need to worry about them grounding out

FYI on my '96 I just had to remove the blue rubber and rearrange my pins. I just cut the two spare powers out, as I have no intentions of returning to the old style harness.

I was going to add that you could install the remaining wires in the two top holes but after I thought about it for a while I figured it would be best not to add that choice for the general public. The problem is that if you/they sell the car and for some reason they try to install the "proper" Trans they might run into an issue when they plug in that connector.

quick question. i've got another thread asking this but i'll ask here for the guys that have subscribed.

i'm putting a 99+ 4R70W in my 97 stang.

The wiring harnesses don't match. I can't remember off the top of my head the pin arrangement on my harness.

Would I need to follow this guide or is this for the aod to aode swap?

If I need to do something different, does anyone know the correct way I need to re-arrange my wires? Also I think ford went to a totally different shaped harness plug all together or so the transmission shop says??

If the plugs are different shapes then I question whether you got a 4R70W. I put a 2002 4R in my 94 and the plug is the same physical shape but the pins need to be rearranged like above. Yes you need to swap your MLPS, ouput shaft sensor and speedo sensor.

well i'm just basing this from what the shop told me. I won't know for sure whether or not they are different shapes until I go see it again.

It is a 4R70W though because it has the same part numbers and case numbering as the one mine has.

I was told that I also need to pull the TCC solenoid out of my 97 4R and use it in the new one.

What is the MLPS? As far as swapping the output shaft sensor and speedo sensor goes, can I pull those off of my old transmission and put them on the new one or would it be easier to try and use the new wiring harness some how?
