View Full Version : Can someone educate me on the basics of custom tuning?

I'm almost ready to have my S Trim installed on my 98 Cobra. I don't know the first thing about what goes on during the tuning process other than, "Dyno pull, adjustment, dyno pull, adjustment."

I'm interested in things like: injector pulse width, how the A/F Ratio is adjusted and maintained, what the A/F ration actually means and what number I should be targeting, etc...

I don't want to have something so important done to the car with out at least a cursory understanding of what's going on, as well as, what to look for.

I have to tell you, I'm deathly afraid of the tuner blowing my car up. I simply can't afford a new motor right now. That may force me to hold off on the install.

Thanks guys,
Alan

I fully dont understand it and i have the same stuff used to tune mine ;).

The basics are a\f and timing.

Tune wise.Make sure your tuner has a good track record with blown cars.ANd that should ease some of the pressure. But not all of it.

Thanks. :)

25 looks and not a single overly techinical answer. (That's what I was hoping for.) I'm trying to get geeked out on this info. :)

I think I'm just going to wait until I move to Florida to get this done. There seem to be more Mustangs going fast there than here in So Cal.

My mustang goes fast:scratch: hahahah

You should wait until you move to Florida if it will be soon. They can tune you for 93 octane instead of our 91. If you want a good tuner that knows whats up here go to Steve @ Powertrain dynamics in Hunnington Beach. He deals with lots of Blown cars and knows whats up.

If you want your blower installed give me a pm. I have installed a few;)

Thanks for the offer. :)

I still have a few things I need to pick up to complete the installation. Fuel pump, chip and 42# injectors should cover it.

Unfortunately, I have this 94 Cobra roller here and it's got some of my money tied up...

I'll probably have to sell it before I can go any further..

Hell, at this point I'd take 1500-2000 for the car and my blower installed and tuned just to be rid of it. :(

Can't take it to Florida. (*well, I'm not planning on it, anyway*)

These wheels aren't on the car any more. Now, they're stock 97 Cobra wheels. Also, the bumper is Primered.

Headlights aren't on the car anymore. The original owner has them.

This is a pic of the interior. I yanked the cage and will be putting it in my 98 Cobra.:) Sorry the pic is crappy. The car is red, not orange like the camera makes it look.

I have a few more pics, in better detail of the back, side and front. If you shoot me your email address, I'll send them to you.

Later,
Alan
