View Full Version : Spool and Axles Questions

I'm going to be buliding a bulletproof rear pretty soon and I need some advice as to which way to go. I was thinking of a Moser Spool and 31 splines with 3" race studs. Can I run factory style C-clip axles with this setup? What benefit do you get from eliminating the C-clips? I just need to know what all parts I'll need for this. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

DOnt think a spool allows c-clips right?

under NHRA rules you can't run a spool with c-clips, because they will break in short order....

I'll move this over to drag racing after my reply.

You can't run C clips with a spool the spool itself won't accept them and if you buy axles in a package for a spool there will not be notches in the axle for the C clips. You have to run C clip eliminators, C clip eliminators are basically an aluminum housing with a pressed in bearing, which slides onto the axle and the aluminum housing bolts to the rear end. This means that if you were to snap an axle it will not come out of the car. In a high HP car the last thing you want to do is lose an axle at 100 MPH.

The problem with this is you lose ABS because the eliminator fits in the same place as the ABS sensor would be. To make this all work I would have a shop that knows how to install C clip eliminators do the work. The brake plate that mounts to the housing will have to be machined to accept the eliminator (I have pics somewhere if you need them) and the housing ends have to be cut down so that the eliminator will seal properly when installed.

That's the info I was looking for Bill. Thanks for that. Wasn't for sure which forum to post it in. Thanks again.

No problem at all. Also don't worry about threads being moved it's not like the mods get mad and move them. I just felt this was pretty specific to drag racing and could apply to anyone. Plus it lets me use my moderator button. :)

Where is the best place to buy a spool package with C Clip elims, axles, and spool?

You can buy the entire package with the c clips pressed on and the studs in the axles from Moser. You may want to give Craig from Cincy Speed a call and mention Modular Depot. He's got a banner ad on this site. Follow it to his site for his number.

I can get a strange package with 31-33 splines, C clip elims, lite pro race spool and 1/2" studs for $619. Good deal or not?

It's not an ABS thing it's a rear disk brake thing so yes the same modification would have to be done.
