View Full Version : How to improve shift?

So what's the best route to take to improve the shift on these trannys?
The chip helped alot, but it's still not as crisp as I'd like.
I've read a lot over on the kiddie board, but don't really trust them.
There's a valve body from PSP for $200. Is that the way to go?
Is there a paper available for the 4R100 like Jerry's on the 4R70?
Can these trannys handle the WOT shifts when modified?
Just trying to cure my ignorance, one step at a time.

I use a line-mod valve. Obviously it isn't the best for the transmission..
I have heard good things about the "Factory-Tech" valve body (Or "Monster-Box" if that route is chosen), and I have heard BAD things about Level-10.. But we knew that already.
I don't know what other options there are for these?

I feel the line mod valve is the best way to go. The only thing you have to watch out for is the backout shifts being too firm. If these get too firm, you can start breaking large, metal parts that rotate.
Right now, there are 4-6 injectors shut off during a WOT shift. With a line mod valve you can get away with none to only a few injectors, if modified correctly in the 0's and 1's. This really improves performance on the truck.

Jerry,
When you say backout shifts, are you talking about when you are drivng the truck at WOT, and you back out (For whatever reason) right when it shifts and BOOM you have a hard as $hit shift? My old JDM chip did that... It was REAL hard...
The chip I had done locally doesn't shift nearly that hard...
Glad to know how you feel about the line-mod valve!

Yes that is a back out shift. Transgo makes really hard backouts too (on 4R70W anyway) because they remove some of the check balls that are there to prevent such an occurance. It's the big bang for sure, esp if you have a chip or something to increase the line pressure. Jerry helped by modifying my cal, but upgrading the VB was the real fix.

Diablo sport sells a valve kit for that trans i have used it a lot in the f250 and f350 deisl trucks. it is a mild shift setting but once you do the diablo sport valves you can add a spring kit dynamic turbo to it to make it shift harder. also leval 10 sells the same setup springs and valve for twice the money but it comes all in the same packege if that matters. i am installing a valve kit in my own truck this week.
