View Full Version : BFG DR Launch ?????????
I'm going with 275x50x15 BFG DR's for my next trip to the track. Since I've been running 17" Nitto DR's can anyone give me the lowdown on launching with these babies? Do I need to get them as hot as the Nitto's......in the water or just wet them and pull foward. Slip the clutch? Will I have to help clean up the track if my rear end blows? I don't have long to learn these things so any help would be great. BTW they will be mounted on awesome V6 wheels.......I'll be the envy of everyone there:D

Are the tires brand new? If they are, then put them on and go out one night and find you a nice smooth road to burn the hell out of them. They hook best after they have some tread off of them. At the track heat them up nice and good. If they're broken in good, they probably don't need a HUGE burnout, but give 'em a good 5-7 seconds after they start smoking. You'll have to experiment with the launch rpm and action with the clutch. It will really depend on how new they are. They should take a relatively high rpm dump once they're just right.
FYI, Bob C. usually buys his BFGs used once the tread is almost all the way gone. I believe he usually dumped his Cobra at 5500 rpm on the same tires.

I think that BFG recomends a 30 sec burn out and then remove them for 24 hours. The tires must cure after being heat cycled.
My best results happened after a moderate burnout and dumping the clutch at 4500 rpm.
Mike, yea they're new. I'll mount them and drive on them a couple of days before going to the track on the 18th. They should be heat-cycled a few times by then:D
Racer_X, did you dump the clutch like you would on slicks or just a quick release?
Water or no water?
Thanks :headbang:

When I had BFG's I also had alot less HP and stock gears. So to answer your question. Yes I dumped the clutch like on slicks.
Now with Nittos and MORE power I have to walk it out or slip the clutch or it burns the tires till I shift to 2nd.

Thanks, I'll probably slip it a bit till I find the sweet spot:headbang:

Since they're new try not to get too discouraged your first time out on them. They probably won't hook for shit on your first pass or two. I bought a brand new pair at the beginning of the season and after 15 passes or so they still weren't giving the results that they're capable of. Lloyd(slosvt) got down to 1.6s on an old set I had a year or two ago, but they were nearly bald. They'll work really damn good when they get broken in! :)

dumping at 4,500 rpm on BFGs got me a busted torque box... those thing hook great.
12 psi rocks!

Mike was that with stock control arms? Mine is all still stock under there. I'm more concerned about an axel or axel tube. Probably should have everything welded but can't find the time:dontknow:

I twisted an axle tube with BFG DR's on ProStars. Ive also broken the spider gears 2 times with these tires.
They work best with 12psi and a nice burnout. Rev up to 5k and take off. They will spin but they fight the entire time trying to get the car moving. Ive seen a best of 1.68 on these tires and avgd. 1.72's. :)

Jay - Save yourself some money and go somewhere and get the boxes welded in and get the tubes welded so you have something you don't have to worry about at the track. I recomend that to everyone that does any type of hard beating on there car such as drag racing or autoX.

Yea, I need to take care of this before it bits me in the ass:D
I'll make some calls today and get it done ASAP.
Thanks, Jay

I happen to have a BFG DR brochure and like Racer_X said, heat cycle. Couple passes at strip and rest tire for 24 hrs. This stabilizes tread compound. The burnout.... don't drown the tire (waterbox), turn over tires with a hint of smoke. This is from the BFG literature. I bought mine from Discount Tire Direct and they offered heat cycling for a few bucks extra. At this point I can't spin em except in the burnout box.:thumb:

So at what RPM were you launching? I like the idea of crankin to 5000 and letting it go:D
I was going to get the heat cycling from DTD for the BFG's but they are in such short supply that one is coming from Ohio and one from Texas.......didn't want to wait any longer.

I havent had to good of luck with my Bfg's lately but I have been running them at 18 psi. I guess I will have to drop them down, I have a best 60 ft of 1.87 all the rest are around 1.9?...I need a 1.7 anything 60ft I guess I will drop them down a few psi...Any one ever heard of tearing torque boxes with an Automatic? Maybe thats a stupid question but just wondering...Thanks for the info guys....Theo

I'd think if you were running a transbreak it would be beneficial. JMO of course.

its always a good idea to weld everything up, but i think you'll be fine with the auto.
an auto (even with a loose convertor) wont hit the tires/chassis like a stick car. of course launching off a trans brake is a totally different story.

I let it go at 4500 all night after a good 5-7 sec burnout.

thats good news, Jay!
now its definatily time to bring home that 12 second slip since you can launch like a madman, and not break! :)

Good thread here guys. I was not aware of the heat cycle thing with the BFG's. Mine are brand new and I had them on the street once for fun, did one little burnout. Then went to the track a week later and got 5 runs in. Did some 5-7 sec burnouts each time. Only cut a 1.9 60', I am a sissy I know, I need to drop the pressure down in the tires and raise the launch. So, did I screw anything up with the tires for not really heat cycling them properly? Thanks guys.

From what I've been told you'll see a big difference in them next time out. Check out Bill's great article on the homepage and get tour axle tubes and T-boxs welded up before it's too late. Then launch like a madman

my drag radials are just about done, you can only really see the two stripes running through the center no real tread pattern any more...they are better than ever I am running about 17 psi in them at the track now and better 60's, 1.86 best so far I really want a 1.79 but I dont think it will happen...definitely a good thread...Theo

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I noticed that you switched from 17" Nitto's to BFG's. How did you do with the Nitto's? That's what I have. What did you do for tire pressure and burnout on those? Anyone else's recommendations also??

I did well with the Nitto's.....getting ~ 1.80-1.90 60's depending on track conditions. I used the "Starkie Nitto Prep"......13psi, back into the water to wet down.....pull out of the water and burn em in 2nd gear (w/4.10's) for 7-10sec. then lunch at 3500 with a slight clutch slip. No matter what you've heard the Nitto's have to be very hot to hook. Hopeing to get in the 1.7's with these BFG's:headbang:

I could get 1.67 sixty foot times with Mike's old 275/50 15's. They were just about bald, but they were gold at the track. And that's before I went crazy with weight reduction.

starkie,
thats on bfg's or nittos?
I am doing fox rears with x2c 175 front coilovers..... I had to put new stock struts due to my awesome old wornout ones popping on the install. Now traction seems to be no where with the 15 inch nittos
on stock suspension i could "accidentally" cut 1.8s all day long now i am scared i wont even hit 1.9s with this suspension. :(

That was on BFG's. They hooked better for me then the Nittos.

Great thread and i picked up a bunch. Now i need to cycle my tires and leave at 4,500!
I heat cycled mine, and didn't use them for a week or so. Mine are bald now, and hook better than they did when they were new. How's a 1.800 sound on a very worn out OEM clutch and maybe 215rwhp....??
BTW, this is on the 16" BFG DRs. I'm hoping for solid low 1.7's next time out.
