View Full Version : stuck throttle+barbed wire fence = bad

Particularly when on a motorcycle.

I conducted an ad hoc experiment today.

I went for a ride for the first time in about 2 months, my knee feeling pretty good these days. I decided to try a really tame road, not anything agressively twisty or populated.

Rounded a corner on the way to my ride, a corner I have ridden more than a few times and driven a lot more.....

came up to the turn and couldn't slow down.
got into the turn, leaned over, and was headed towards the outside. My momentum was huge....

I killed the engine, but had too much momentum to stop.
went off into the grass and the rear end came around. I tried to drop the bike but it wouldn't go down, so I stood up trying to get it to stop sliding and go straigh.

That didn't happen.....

I slid sideways into a barbed wire fence at about 35. Drug along the fence for about 20 yards and finally fell over into the grass.

It sounds worse than it was. I scratched the heck out of my bike, and tore up my jeans and my jacket (thank god for kevlar sleeves! had I had kevlar in my pants I would have got off scot free!)

so, I need a new jacket and a lot of paint.... oh, and a bunch of bandages.

So, I learned that barbed wire fences are bad.

They are quite abrasive.

My advice? Kids, don't try this at home....

Scott, I think I figured out the cause of the incident....

I had thought someone might point out the paradox of my experiment and my signature.

The truth was I approached the corner signifigantly faster than I would of had I wanted to agressively attack it. I just didn't slow down from my "faster than acceptable for a corner but signifigantly slower than normal" pace....

Even the really, really nice bicyclists (I love this town more and more) who stopped check on me commented that they didn't expect me to miss the corner like that....

They actually complimented me for driving an acceptable speed... Most people blast throught there at like a 100....

Arrgh!
