This place is a tech board, but it's dead. I'm not the mod over here anymore, but I want to see some action!

How 'bout representin' your Focus on the Depot a little bit. Now's your chance. Post up your pics, mods, and plans for your cars.

Thanks!

These are some action pics from the G&W "Fall Fling" down at Virginia International Raceway this past Thanksgiving:

Staged and ready to go (I'm pretty sure that's Egz right behind me).

Hard braking then set up for 2nd gear turn 4:

All pics compliments of Hal over on [FJ]:headbang:

My plans for '04:

1) Change oil.
2) Bleed Brakes.
3) Track day
4) Goto 1)

But seriously, I'd like to spend as little money and time working on my car this year. And participate as much as possible in:

--At least 2 driving schools
--At least 2 open track days (When can we sign up for the Fall Fling?)
--About a dozen or so auto-x's.

And if I do spend any money/time on my car(in this order):

--Oil catch can
--Rear drum-to-disc conversion
--Front Bat big brake kit? (This one is up in the air since I'm not really sure I want to make the step up to 16" wheels/tires since I already have a ton of 15" wheels and I sold all of my 16" wheels)
--Intercooler. I'm still leaning towards an air/liquid PWR barrel located between the engine and the firewall.
--In the fall, I'm seriously considering gutting the hatch and adding a cage/bar.

Things I need/want for my toolbox:

--Decent laptop based data logging software/hardware.

To keep this forum somewhat alive, just thought I'd post some info about the pic's above.

Last fall, Egz, myself and 9 other guys from Focaljet headed down to Virginia International Raceway for G&W's annual Fall Fling. It was a two day track event Thanksgiving weekend on VIR (http://www.virclub.com) Full. It cost us just under $240/driver. And we can't forget about Hal who came all the way down from Frederick to take pic's! Goto 'Track Information'-->'Track Facts'-->'Track Layout' on the VIR (http://www.virclub.com) page to see a pic of the track. Under 'Main Course', there's a picture of the whole layout.

First off, VIR is a beautiful and world class facility. It was my first time to a road course so I didn't really know what to expect. But the grounds and facilities were incredible. Hell, even the restroom way up on the hill where we pitted was heated.

The other thing that was incredible was all the $ at that track. I don't know all my exotic cars that well. All I can say is that there was about 160 cars there for the event and quite a few of them were damn fine. The saddest part was when the 3 day old M3 that had hit a tire barrier got loaded up on the rollback. Probably totaled.

The event itself was run pretty much flawlessly. The event rules were, any time to clean up an accident was taken out of your run group. And luckily, our run group didn't experience any issues. The run groups were divided up by drivers skill. We all ran in the Green group since quite a few of us were complete track virgins. And it was nice to have the veteran drivers in our group to give us pointers throught the weekend. In the green group, passing was only allowed on the straights after a wave by had been given to you by the slower car in front. It was very satisfying to receive wave-by's from drivers in Vipers and Porsche's after hounding their rear bumper for 3 or 4 turns. But then very humbling when they forgot or neglected to lift down the straight to let the economy car pass.

Each day went as follows: Drivers meeting first thing both days. Then we went out on track by run group for 30 minute sessions. There were about 40 cars per run group and four run groups. 40 cars spread out over a 3.27 mile course made for just about the right amount of room. Every once in a while you'd get stuck behind some traffic. But for the most part, it was flat out fun. Most drivers were very courteous and gave wave-by's. But there were a few that just did not get it. If that happened, all you had to do was head into pit-lane and ask them to send you out in some 'fresh air'. Saturday and Sunday we got four 1/2 hour sessions totalling 4 hours of track time. Do the dollars/time calculation and that works out to $1 per minute on track. Compare that to auto-x or the drag strip.

I hit about 120 down the backstraight in my little focus. There was more in the car but braking for a downhill, off camber, 3rd gear turn from 120 is a little ominous for a noob like myself. I think Turbo Tom (1turbofocus) hit 150 in his wicked 330whp turbo SVTF. And I know Egz was plagued by the damn speed-limiter in his 2.3.

I've done 30+ auto-x events and I've even been to the drag strip once. After being on a full racetrack. Let me tell you, there is no comparison. The Focus will never be that great at the strip. And yes, the Focus is a great car for auto-x. But it was meant for the track. I may spend a 20 spot here and there at an auto-x and I'd definately like to get back to the drag strip but I'll be saving up most of my money now for driving schools and open track events.

The only drawback about running a roadcourse is the prepwork that's involved beforehand. Friday night when we arrived down there I was out in the rain changing brake pads. And others were doing various tinkering. Before even leaving for the event, each of us made a thorough inspection of our cars by checking suspension parts for damage, torquing bolts, etc... But in the end, it proved to be well worthwhile!

Yup, I was stuck at 105. I'm waiting for the flasher, as thats the first thing to go.

Damn, that's really cool. I was wondering about the even 'til you posted the details a little further down. I've never done the "twisties" but lately it's seemed like something fun I'd like to try.

I'd like to drive something competitive where you can make some real passes. I haven't passed somebody in a corner since I rode quads...

Did you read where I said us Focus drivers were getting wave-by's from Vipers and Porsche's that should have been much faster than us? In an entry level group, its way more about the driver skill than the car.

Just run whatever you have and have fun!

Here is a photo of a full-race circle track midget using a built 2.3 liter Focus Duratec engine. This car only weighs about 900 pounds! Naturally aspirated horsepower is about 330 with 270 ft lbs of torque at 8000 rpm on pure methanol fuel.

The owner of this car is Bruce Beane and the driver is Russell Stohr. The race sanctioning body is: http://www.nemaracing.com

This is a photo of Bruce Beane's test engine taken at Circle Performance, http://www.circleperformance.com . This engine is kind of ugly in it's research and development mode.

Another great website for a company on the West coast supplying performance parts and builds for a variety of engines including the Ford Focus Duratec is http://www.marcymotorsport.com

I'm looking for a driving light-less front upper grill. Let me know where I can get one that matches the SVT lower. BAT Sells the ST170, but it's not honeycomb from what I can tell.

I'm also looking to trade up the SVT 5 spokes for Euro wheels due to price. Should have that done before the end of summer:)

Just enjoying the car now that's it's not at Ford every week. KNOCK THE HELL ON WOOD!!!

Why would you say that...? I have a 03 SVT Focus, 5 door, Sonic Blue, yada, yada...I have had it in for the factory reflash, but it feels kinda gutless now. Oh, well at least its not stalling.

Do you drive yours in the winter? If you dont, I have a CAI for the car that Im selling. I had it on the car untill 2 days ago. The check engine light came on a week ago, and turns out the intake was sucking in salt water and crap...it then f'd up the MAF sensor. The dealer charged me 1 hr of diag. time, but theyre going to warranty the sensor. As long as the car isnt driven in the rain/snow, it works great.

How is that SCT reflash working for you? Is it a chip like the mustangs? If it is, can SCT just burn one and mail it to me, or does the car have to be dynoed?

Thanks,
Tim

The car was reflashed through the diagnostic port. No dyno tune needed for the basic reflash from SCT. It just takes a few minutes to re-program.

I love the SCT tune. I had issues until 5k miles with warranty and other issues. I enjoy the car, but my ownership experience has been soured due to all the early issues.
