View Full Version : Is a D-1SC too much for a stock 99 Cobra ?

My bro in law is looking for more power and gave me the job to find him a sweet setup. He would like 425 safe rwhp on the stock engine. He already decided he would go with a centrifugal. Is that kind of numbers possible/safe on a non intercooled Vortech setup ? We are currently leaning toward the D-1SC because it's cheaper than the Vortech, comes intercooled, and doesn't have the problems associated with the P-1.

His biggest concern is blowing up the engine. He would really like to install the blower and be done with it, so the powertrain reliability is a big concern. I realize anything can happen and told him there is absolutely no guarantee when installing a blower. I know the tune is the most important thing so we already planned a 3 hour trip to Montreal to get the car tuned by pros. Maybe I should try to convince him to aim for more and to start saving up for a rebuild. :D What do you guys think ?

What do you guys recommend as far as fuel system goes ? I know most people go with the 03 Cobra tank, fuel pumps and a KB Boost-A-Pump. That should do it, don't you think ?

Thanks a lot for your input guys, it is appreciated

I dont' see why 425rwhp isn't possible with a non-aftercooled Vortech setup on a Cobra. Those 4v's love to rev so it would take probably 10-12psi to make that number. The D1SC would be a good choice also because it can huff some air as well and intercooling is a plus. The 03 Cobra fuel setup with a BAP will more than take care of 425rwhp.

I'd put that blower on a Stock 2V if I was going to get a blower it has my vote too. My friend has the same blower pushing 15 ibs through a stock short block and it makes great power 466 to be exact.

I think you will be fine with the D1. I had a P1 on my 97 GT and it was fine until I had the built motor dropped in then it just didn't have the balls to make any power os it cost me an extra 1,200 to have it upgraded to a D1. I wish I would have done the D1 in the first place because it would have saved me a ton of money, down time and a SH*T load of aggreivation!

Vortech and ATI are both kick AZZ blower s and are both proven to make some sick power but I went the ATI route main;y for the self contained and the cooler! This is my choice and I'm am not saying that one is better than the other.
