View Full Version : Which Cam?

After looking at different discussions about the power that these engines make, low end torque seems to be lacking. Sometime down the road I'll do an intake and head swap (P+Ped) and some sort of cam shaft. Any suggestions on what might provide something on the lower end? I'm too lazy to look at the V6 Mustang sites, besides a post here will help other people!

here are the heads I prefer, they outflow almost everything out there, including the 99 heads and CMRE stage II's.

I know what cam those heads use, but I'm not completley sure what a stock head could use. Probably a little higher lift, but the stock heads don't flow all that great. Once you get ported, get some flow numbers, and that will help you decide how to regrind your cam.

Brian,
I've heard that the higher flowing heads can actually hurt lower end torque. Those heads look sweet, but I'm wondering if they are more a race style than a street head. Morana and Super Six have their Stage heads which flow well. I'm looking for more seat in the pants, gotta have torque!

I would also check out this place, RGR seems to be highly recommended by V6 stangers and he will help you get the perfect regrind for your set-up. I may be getting my heads ported by him instead of morana. If found out Every single port job Thats been dynoed has actually had more low end torque than stock as long as the cam does not get TOO wild.

Brandon,
I've seen him posting on the V6 message boards, he seems to really know his stuff. If any of his ported work goes up for sale people jump all over it. Have you contacted him at all? Didn't you tell me once that if the heads flow TOO well that torque #s could actually go down? That's what I was thinking about when looking for a torquer cam.

honestly I Made a mistake before. I've learned that it is almost impossible to go too big on the porting on a 3.8L, and its the camshaft to makes you loss bottom end torque. My point should have been: Why pay for all that expessive porting when you need a monster cam profile to take advantage of it which will kill your low end torque. A decent Port job (around 400-500$) will Be plenty for a daily drive and will work great with moderiate camshaft which will actually retain your low end torque and even give you a slight gain on the bottem end. I'm looking at going With a 400$ port job and a new camshaft, valve springs, andpush rods for another 300$ and For 700$ I should be at around 210-220 BHP = around 170-175 rwhp.

You getting everything from him? He pretty much has everything needed to do a good job. Now, if you get those other heads ported by him, what are you doing with your old ones?! (hint, hint!)
