View Full Version : My dyno results

I put my 98 on the dyno this weekend to get a base line with very dissapointing results.

The operator got it up to 3000 RPM in 3rd gear and then started the mapping and floored it and took it all the way to the limiter (132 Mph).

I thought that the Mark's were supposed to be tested in 2nd gear?

The result was 205 HP and 230 torque.

If I put my weight and 1/4 mile ET into a HP calculator I get that I should have roughly 238 RWHP.

Was the car tested wrong, or do I have some other issue? It is a bone stock base model right now.

That actually is very average for stock horsepower numbers on a Mark VIII. You’ll probably hear some people chip in with how they got 220 or more completely stock. That would be the exception and not the rule. Most REAL stock Mark VIII’s I heard of or seen do between 205 to 210 completely stock. Motor Trend Magazine did a dyno run on a 93 Mark VIII some years back and got 209 on an stock engine with 40,000 mile on it. I never dyno-ed mine stock but with only a chip I got 228 hp. From the seat of pants feel, I felt the chip was worth about 20 hp so I’m sure mine was with in the 205 to 210-range stock. The transmission is a big culprit for robbing horsepower on these cars. Lincoln wants the shifts to be smooth and almost unperceivable. It actually retards the ignition timing prior to shift to make the shift feel smoother. Having your computer re-programmed with a more aggressive program will really wake up your Mark. Sometimes this is a hit or miss proposition but when it works it’s super.

Testing in second gear will give you slightly lower numbers (maybe 5% less).

Wow, I knew the was some significant loss, but holy cow!

Well I am getting tuned by Jerry in 2 weeks, I know that is going to make a huge difference.

After that who knows, new driveshaft and gears are defiantly needed, then maybe a whole new exhaust system.

It’s only money right?

Guys I am leaning towards the ported heads and cams...

The blower is worth 100 hp at 8 psi roughly...

With cams heads and little bottom end risks.. Extrude honed intake and oversized TB it should get close to the 100 hp number with less headache and still have a warranty.

can you post your dyno chart, I believe the peek HP is some where around 5700 rpm, if you hit the limiter before then that would explain the lower number. I don't think 20 RWHP from just the chip is the norm, more like 10 maybe?

"Nightsky" got 221-rear wheel HP at Carlisle last year on his 93 with only a 2.5" aftermarket exhaust system.

Off the shelf chips are a hit or miss thing. The best is an "on the dyno" tune since all cars are slightly different and your being tuned for your car specifically. Like I said earlier I was lucky with my first mail order chip, it worked well. I didn’t have it dyno-ed prior but using a handheld stopwatch my 0-60 mph times dropped from low 7-second range to mid 6’s consistently. I’ve since added a larger MAF and a few other smaller things and using a G-Tech has shown my 0-60 times to be in the 5.9 to 6.1 range consistently.

I recently had my chip re-programmed by “Jerry” through Dennis with an off the shelf program. It seems to be much more aggressive now. My best G-Tech times prior to this were 14.55 to 14.7 (backed up by and actual 14.6@ 97.4 at the Heavy Weight Shootout last November). My latest G-Tech times are 14.3 to 14.4 so it did work. I still would rather have it tuned on a dyno for best results. Good luck with yours, I’m sure you’ll be.

DB, you still want to make a trip up there together? We need to plan it now. I hope to make it to Elite this weekend with the LS1 group to dyno out my car since I was unavailable last weekend.

Yeah Mike, I remember. You were the only one of us brave enough to get up on the dyno . I wanted too but I had a bad plug wire at the time and didn't know it. This year I'll give it a shot on the dyno.....If it's still running good (LOL).

Here is my sheet, I hope it is clear enough, if not I will post the original for download.

Nightsky, when are you going up? My appointment is on Saturday, so I will be going up Friday afternoon. Let me know. Are you going to the track tomorrow night? If so I will see you there.

looks like you hit the the limmiter before peak power. with a stock drive shaft and gears you should dyno in 2nd gear then you can correct it for 3rd gear by like 3% if i remember what jerry told me

When I dynoed my 95 completely stock with 3.73 gears (which shouldn't make a difference) I got 226 rwhp and 241 rwtq. I did 3 runs and 2 of them were right on while the other was a little higher than this so we through that one out. I also hit the speed limiter though since it wasn't chipped yet before I hit the end of the power curve. This was with the paper filter and silencer also.

Do you guys know if they will hav ea dyno there this year??

MTCFORUM

Joe,
They have had a portable dyno the last two years I was there at Carlisle. It's kinda like a barber shop where you have to take a number and wait your turn. I don't remember the price but it seems like it was something like $75 for two runs. Mike "Nightsky" could tell you since he was the only one of us who did it last year.

I think that was the price... My memory is not with me...

Who do I contact for Dallas dyno... I have said that I wanted to go on here but have heard nothing back. DB got a email that says he has a spot and I got nada...

I thought a lot of people took the driveshaft off of a mark to put on their birds and cats, why woulf you change yours? Am I wrong? Let me know..

The '93 Mk8 driveshaft is a better alternative, but not the best(it still has it's limits).'94 and newer are the two-piece design, and they suck almost as much as the OEM TBird driveshaft. The best would be a Dynotech shaft from Dennis.

My 1995 LSC actually came with a one piece aluminum driveshaft but it still vibrated at higher speeds. I had Dennis R. replace it with a Metal Matrix Driveshaft at his shop and it's probably the best money I've spend on my Mark VIII yet. My bad vibs are history now. The original driveshaft looked amazingly like the MM shaft as they laid side by side but on the car there was no comparision. The MM wins hands down. I forgot and left my old shaft at Dennis's shop but I wondered why it couldn't be properly balanced. It really doesn't matter because I'm very happy with the MM Driveshaft.

Hmm....I was under the impression that only the '93 had the one piece.Maybe it was a thing with the LSC? Anyhow,I have the MM driveshaft from Dennis also, and it's an amazing piece.I still have a ever so slight vibration that is intermittent.I'm thinking it might be my rear diff to frame mount-it's in pretty bad shape. That,or the tires(new ones on the way-so that'll eliminate tires).I'm tracking it down and will find it..just a mater of time.It could also be the number of miles that I ran the old OEM shaft in my TBird with the 3.73 FRPP diff.I might have injured the pinion bearing.

Aluminum cannot be properly balanced due to inconsistencies in metal density across the length of the tube..

the MMC ensures a very linear balance across the shaft ...
Also has to do with lighter weight, centrifigual forces, etc structural strenght..

This is high level but basically what Dennys Drive shaft service explained to me when I asked the question,

Hey not too bad! What are ya runnin in the 1/4 these days. I hav'nt been to the track since last year with you guys when I did the 14.6. I have made some more mods including the MSD Dis 4 and am still running the stock chip. I hope to get a chip soon.

At what RPM does your DOHC start to drop power and torque? Where were your peaks at?

Are you running jerry's chip?
