I'm looking for some better coils for the 4.6. MSD doesn't make anything yet. From my past experiences with their coils I was pretty happy with the results. Well I found a company that manufactures them Performance Distributors. When I talked to them they said that the ones they manufacture will only work on the SOHC and that there is a difference between the these and the DOHC coils. Is this true, can you explain this? Their link is http://www.performancedistributors.com/5.0ignition.htm

Well, they are probably confusing the newer style of individual coils (1997 and up Mark, 1998 and up TownCar/CV, 1999 and up Mustand) with the system you have. Those coils will work, no problem.

I know people like Dennis are running the Accel coils with non problem. I try to stay away from non big brand type ignition parts, it is too scary. I love MSD products, will use nothing but their ignition parts on my race car, but Dennis can tell you he went through several MSD DIS4's to get one that worked correctly. Just seen another 1998 Mark have two bad DIS4's. These newer ignition systems are pretty sensitive.

K, cool then I'll be one of the first to try this type out. As for the MSD ignition box, I hope I don't have any problems with the one I ordered. Is there a batch number that I can check or is it just random bad units?

Dennis told me today that is was not bad DIS4's, they were bad tach adapters. Now, you do NOT need a tach adapter on any of these cars, only on the old 5.0L type stuff when you tap the tach signal off the coil like the old days. On the 93-96 cars, there is a clean tach out, CTO signal that runs the tach. It's hardwired can comes out of the EEC. It takes the crank sensor signal and convert's it to a tach signal.

On the 97/98 cars there is a data line that runs from the EEC to the dash with a bunch of info and this is on that data line.

Damn Jerry,

You read minds too....lol. That was my next question. I'm glad I didn't order one. Do you know what pin I tap off of for the output? I can't use the signal right off the sensor right? I have to take it from the EEC after it's converted?

I've have both the MSD Dis4 and the Accel coil packs. I was told by the MSD tech I needed the tach adapters and I use them as well. when/if I don't hook the adapters up I get no tach love. Is there another way? Any idea What the symptoms of Bad tach adapters are?

When the MSD Tach. Adapters start to go bad the motor will pick up a miss. It will come and go with No warning and will keep getting more frequent and will drop stark to two cylinder at a time on one coil pack. I was in the process of re-soldering and inspecting each wire when someone tapped his finger on the Tach. Adapter and it nearly killed the motor. MSD gave me two new ones last July. I just sent them back with the Dis 4 because it is missing again I told them to check everything this time I was tired of fighting with it.
When the MSD works it's great. It does have one major down fall the two-step doesn't have a low enough RPM setting. 4000 rpm is two high unless you have a stick or 4000 stall converter.

Hey-

Was flipping through the summit catalog and saw the following add.

Looks like MSD makes a high output coilpack replacement... Although I couldn't find them on the MSD website and Summit shows them as being back-ordered..

FYI..

So can anyone here vouge for the "Screamin Demon" colipacks? For $100, they sound like a decent deal.

EDIT- I just went to the Summit catalog and searched for MSD part number 8224 and they came back $39.95 each, backordered with expected shipping date of April 14th. Maybe I'll just get the MSDs, change the plugs and revisit the dynometer...

Scheduled ship date on the coil packs are 5/20/02 they have not received any of them from MSD they just know that they are supposed to. Apparently this is very new on MSD's product list.
