View Full Version : Jerry's tailshaft lube mod

Ballacaule sent me the link to Jerry's thesis and specifically the tail shaft mod.

I understand the rear portion - tap the fitting in the rear and drill the .050 hole in the bushing.

I have no idea what it is telling me to do on the front half to GET fluid to the bushing. I mean, it is written there, but I don't get it.

Can anyone who has done it explain it to me better or tell me where to find additional pictures to clear it up?

Thanks!
Scott

On the front end of the line, it's screwing into a tapped hole that is already there and plugged. This is normally used to connect a mechanical gauge to read line pressure when checking transmission operation. So, by hooking this line on there and it having the small hole in the back end, line pressure is used to pressure lube the rear yoke/bushing.

Thanks Kris and Dennis. That's the part I didn't get. The pictures make it perfectly obvious.

Still a little leery about trying it, but I'll give it a go in April when I do the gears. Thanks very much!

Ok, back to this since I will have a drive shaft really soon, and already have the gears.

I get it, now. Couple of bone head scott style questions.

In reference to: <A HREF="http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/page12.shtml" TARGET="_blank">http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/page12.shtml</a>

What is an F drill? Is that the drill size? I have never seen drills sized this way - do I need to shop at better hardware stores or someplace special.

Is a 1/8" pipe to 3/16 inverted flair 90 deg fitting common?

What is Crocus cloth? another thing I have never heard of.

Thanks for entertaining my bone head questions,
Scott

Here's the boneheaded question of the day... when is the tailshaft lube mod really necessary? I mean, should I worry about it with the stock 3.27s, or wait until I'm running 3.73's? Thanks for enlightening a transmission newb.

Yes, F is the drill size. Drill bits come in letter, number, and fractional sizes. Then there's metric ones too.

Crocus cloth is sandpaper like, usually 1-2" wide and comes in a roll like tape.

Paul -

Take a look at the link I posted to the thesis. It says you need to do the forced lube mod for 4.10's or greater. I'm not sure it would HURT with numerically lower gears, but it is not listed as necessary.

Kris, thanks! I'll have to look around some more.

Thanks.. I couldn't get on the TCCoA all day, so I couldn't follow the link. That's now one less thing to worry about modding. <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif" BORDER="0">
